Locational/Cell Phone Data
The new streams of locational data from cell phones and GPS devices can provide a better snapshot of today’s travel patterns but also a unique opportunity to enhance our understanding of the drivers of travel behavior. We recognize the value of these new forms of data and have analyzed them to support the evolution of the travel behavior modeling paradigm. We are at the forefront of understanding some of the critical assumptions underlying these data and our analyses aim to leverage the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of these data sources. Our research on passenger and freight locational data helps us more accurately reflect today’s travel patterns, incorporate these insights into our models, and evaluate “what if” scenarios for the more nuanced policy decision making needs both today and in the future.
